How Long After Taking Antibiotics Can You Drink Alcohol?
So, I've been told to hold off on the booze while these penicillin style drugs fix my infected tooth root. Now, the "don't mix drink and antibiotics" line was pretty common years ago but I thought someone had checked on the Internet and found it was all a myth.
Any time you combine two substances, there exists the possibility for what are known as “drug-drug interactions.” There are many reasons for this. A common one is that both substances are metabolized by the same pathway. If you use one of these pathways excessively, then the body will have a hard time breaking down each substance. They will accumulate in the body, potentially causing excessive side effects. In some cases, the drugs could actually indirectly or directly affect each other, compromising efficacy. For these reasons drug companies are required to perform comprehensive testing when certain commonly used products are used concomitantly.
Apart from some special circumstances, it is on the whole OK to drink while on antibiotics. The reason why people think that you should not is that when antibiotics was first being used to cure syphilis, the patients would still be infectious for the first week, so were told not to drink because they were more likely to have sex while drunk. This has since been passed down and has become a “tradition” in a way. The main reason that people are told not to drink when on antibiotics is because doctors prefer people not to drink because it is better for them.
I don't think I've actually had antibiotics with alcohol because I tend to look after myself meticulously if I'm sick enough for antibiotics though I've mixed alcohol with heavy painkillers before. That really didn't end well. I completely forgot I had taken the painkillers a couple of hours prior. I didn't feel any really noticable difference as I was drinking, I just maybe felt a little more dizzy for my level of drunkeness. It hit me after I had had a good 10 beers though. I remember it, it didn't get me super drunk or anything, I just felt like shit. But that was prescription painkillers.
The use of alcohol with antibiotics causes dizziness, vomiting, rapid heart rate and headache. The small amount of alcohol mix with antibiotics causes convulsions, though your blood alcohol content level (BAC) is below 0.08%. The deliberate use of alcohol with antibacterial drugs is a crime. But if you accidently mixed antibiotics with alcohol then you are able to brawl against this accusation under the law. You can lessen this charge or completely eliminate it by the assistance of a qualified lawyer. The use of alcohol with antibiotics may reduce or nullifies the effectiveness of the antibiotics.
