The results of mixing alcohol with antibiotics are varied. Most of the time, drinking alcohol with antibiotics does not lead to adverse reactions. This is not the case in all instances, however. Depending on the type of antibiotic , combining alcohol with antibiotics can lead to decreased and sometimes increased potency of antibiotic medication.
Apart from the fact that it reacts with the medication, alcohol should generally be avoided when one is sick. This is due to the fact that you are prescribed antibiotics when you are obviously quite sick. Alcohol just generally makes feel a lack of energy and this contributes to the feeling of lethargy that is a part and parcel of any illness. Therefore, even if alcohol isn’t directly reducing he effectiveness of the medicine, it is decreasing your rate of recovery by bringing you down. In addition to that, it is important to remember that alcohol is cleansed out of the bloodstream by the liver.
Isoniazid (INH) is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic for latent TB. INH can cause liver damage with long-term use, so your doctor may monitor your liver with blood tests over the months that you take the drug. You should avoid acetaminophen (Tylenol) and alcohol while taking INH, as these can also cause liver damage. (Symptoms of liver damage include nausea, vomiting, yellow discoloration of the eyes, fever, and diarrhea.) Some people who do not have a positive skin test take INH because their history of exposure to someone with active disease makes it likely that they have been infected.

For the most part there is very little evidence to suggest that drinking alcohol while taking antibiotics will make much of a difference either way. However, because of the overall process that your body must go through to process both alcohol and antibiotics it is reasonable to believe that taking both substances in conjunction with each other could possibly hinder or slow the healing process considerably. For this reason the suggestion given by most doctors and pharmacists is to discontinue the use of alcohol while taking antibiotics and most other prescription drugs as well.
