Is Drinking While On Antibiotics THAT Bad?
The use of Alcohol is common with antibiotics as it is taken as a usual drink by most of the people. However, there are certain complications associated with the use of alcohol while you are on a course of antibiotics to cure some infection like sinusitis infection, gonorrhoea and Chlamydia infection.
It is important to note that reliable studies on the various drug-alcohol interactions are scarce and not always updated. Many studies revealing an interaction between certain medications and alcohol use involve young healthy volunteers, are conducted in vitro, or involve animals. These factors make it difficult to extrapolate results from such studies to patients with certain disease states or to those taking multiple medications. In addition, the type of alcoholic beverage used varies among studies and includes beer, red wine, and others. Different alcoholic beverages have a variety of components that affect drug-metabolizing enzymes in different ways.
Both latent TB infection and active TB disease are treated with antibiotics. Treatment lasts at least six months because antibiotics work only when the bacteria are actively dividing, and the bacteria that cause TB grow very slowly. While latent TB infection can be treated with only one antibiotic, active TB disease is treated with several antibiotics at one time, to decrease the chances that the bacteria will evolve resistance to the drugs. Active TB disease must be treated aggressively, and patients may have to start treatment with a hospital stay, to keep them from spreading the disease.
Basically, antibiotics are selective poison for a bacteria that is replicating/growing in your body. And each antibiotic has a different way of working, so one antibiotic might be absorbed into your body and into the bloodstream, get to the source of infection, and cut off the glucose supply to the bacteria, essentially starving the bacterial cells to kill them off. And others work to invade the bacterial cells and destroy them from the inside. Your antibiotic chosen by your HCP is done very specifically to the type of bacteria present and the site of infection.
Table 1 details some important antibiotic-alcohol drug interactions. In general, alcohol should be avoided when taking these antibiotics. Many over-the-counter medications (OTCs), such as cough or cold syrups may also contain alcohol in the formulation. The inactive ingredient listing can be checked to determine if alcohol is present, the label on the OTC bottle can be checked, or ask your physician or pharmacist. Prescription medications may also contain alcohol. Patients should check with their physician or pharmacist each time they receive a new prescription to determine if there are important drug interactions.
